Thanks so much for this comment. I think we definitely have similar experiences as expats in Asia.

Also I totally agree that there needs to be more study about this issue, and I'm surprised there hasn't been. I do remember reading a book in college called Necessary Losses which talks about how certain tragic events are actually necessary as they prepare you for even more tragic ones, but it's fairly universal; there hasn't really been anything focused exclusively on Americans (i.e. White Americans).

And the 9/11 comparison is spot on. I saw a Tweet the other day that was along the lines of, "Everyone is willing to take off their shoes in the airport for a failed terrorist attack 11 years ago but people can't even wear a damn mask?"
